Welcome to the Website of the Tax Assessor - Collector

The mission of the Houston County Tax Assessor / Collector's Office is to administer assessments and collections based on fair and reasonable equalization, while striving to provide quality service motivated by integrity and respect for all Houston County taxpayers. Our duties include the assessment and collection of property taxes, registration and licensing of motor vehicles, voter registration, Boat / Motor registration and titling, and Beer / Wine Permits.


 

Automobile Department

Automobile, truck, trailer and boat registration and title transfers are done in our office. Applications for handicap parking are also available in our office. When these are completed by the doctor, they are returned to our office for issuance of handicap plates or placards.


 

Property Tax - Collections: we collect taxes for

Houston County
Houston County Hospital District
Grapeland Hospital District
Emergency Service District #1
Emergency Service District #2
Elkhart I.S.D.


Statements are mailed for the current year's taxes the first week of October. If not paid by February 1st of the following year, penalty is added and accrues each month. On July 1st, a 20% attorney's fee is added.
 
Any exemptions, which could be applied, should be filed with the Houston County Appraisal District. Also, any changes in address, ownership or exemptions with appraisals should be reported to that office. Any disagreement with appraisals should also be discussed with that office.
 



Voter Registration

You may come to our office to register to vote. After all information is verified, a card will be sent to you. You also have the option of filling out a voter registration application online, printing it out and mailing it to us. Follow the Texas Voter Registration links under Useful Links.
 
In order to be eligible to vote, you need to be registered 30 days before the election. Any time you move, or change your name, you need to notify our office so that your file will be updated and you will be in the correct precinct.
 
As long as all of your information stays the same, you will automatically receive a new card from us every two years.

Where do I apply for property tax exemptions?
(936) 544-9655 - Homestead, over 65 and ag exemptions are granted at the Houston County Appraisal District. Address corrections and questions regarding appraisal values should also be directed to the Appraisal District.

Tax rates and ultimately the amount of taxes levied on property are determined by governing bodies of each of the taxing authorities.
